Formula
Sale price = Original price × (1 − discount % ÷ 100).
With a stacked coupon: Sale price = Original price × (1 − first % ÷ 100) × (1 − extra % ÷ 100).
You save = Original price − Sale price.
Final price with tax = Sale price × (1 + tax % ÷ 100).
Example
A jacket costs $80 and is on sale at 25% off:
Sale price = $60.00; You save $20.00. With an extra 10% coupon, the price drops to $54.00 (32.5% effective discount).
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 20 percent off a price?
Multiply the price by 0.20 to get the savings, then subtract from the original. For a $50 item: $50 × 0.20 = $10 off, so the sale price is $40.
How do stacked discounts work?
Stacked discounts apply one after another, not added together. 25% off plus an extra 10% coupon is a 32.5% total discount, because the 10% applies to the already-reduced price.
Is sales tax applied before or after the discount?
In the US, sales tax is almost always charged on the discounted price you actually pay, which is how this calculator computes it.
What is the difference between 50% off and half price?
They are the same thing — 50% off means you pay half of the original price.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). If an item costs $60 after 25% off, the original price was $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.
