Grade Calculator

Find the final exam score you need to reach your target course grade.

Required final exam score

101.67%

This target may not be achievable with a 0–100% final exam score.

How to use

  1. Enter your current course grade and its weight (e.g. 70% of the grade).
  2. Enter your desired final grade and the final exam weight.
  3. See the minimum final exam score required.

Formula

Required final = (Desired grade − Current grade × Current weight) ÷ Final weight.

Current weight + Final weight should equal 100% (or less if other components exist).

Example

Current grade 85% (70% weight), want 90% final, final exam worth 30%:

Required final exam score = (90 − 85×0.7) / 0.3 ≈ 101.7% — not achievable; you'd need extra credit or a lower target.

Frequently asked questions

What grade do I need on my final exam?
Enter your current grade, its weight, your target grade, and the final exam weight. The calculator shows the required final exam score.
What if the required score is over 100%?
That means your target grade is not achievable with a standard 0–100% final exam. Consider extra credit or adjusting your target.
Can I use this for weighted categories?
Yes. Set current weight to the combined weight of everything before the final (e.g. homework + midterm = 70%).
How is this different from a GPA calculator?
This finds a required exam score for one course. A GPA calculator averages letter grades across multiple courses on a 4.0 scale.
What if my final is worth 40%?
Enter 40 as the final exam weight and adjust the current weight to match the remaining portion of your grade (e.g. 60%).
