Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the US Navy body fat formula?
It is a widely used field estimate, typically within 3–4% of DEXA scan results for most adults when measurements are taken correctly.
Where do I measure neck and waist?
Neck: just below the larynx. Waist: at the navel level. Hip (women): at the widest part of the hips.
What is a healthy body fat percentage?
For men, 10–20% is generally considered healthy. For women, 18–28% is typical. Athletes often have lower percentages.
Is body fat better than BMI?
Body fat percentage directly estimates fat mass, while BMI is a weight-to-height ratio that does not distinguish muscle from fat.
Can I use this for military fitness standards?
This tool provides an estimate. Official military body composition uses specific measurement protocols and may differ slightly.
