Frequently asked questions

What is ideal body weight?
Ideal body weight is an estimated healthy weight for your height, based on population studies. It is a guideline, not a strict target.
Which formula is most accurate?
No single formula is perfect. The average of Robinson, Devine, Miller and Hamwi gives a reasonable range for most adults.
Does ideal weight account for muscle mass?
No. These formulas do not adjust for athletes or people with above-average muscle mass, who may weigh more than the ideal range while being healthy.
How is ideal weight different from BMI?
Ideal weight gives a target weight in kg or lbs. BMI gives a ratio that maps to weight categories. Both use height as the primary input.
Should I aim for my ideal weight?
Use it as a reference alongside body composition, fitness level, and medical advice rather than a rigid goal.
